Two updates in two days! Well we got a call that there was some dirt being pushed around the site so we ran over to check it out.
As I mentioned yesterday, when the team came out to start forming up the slab and dig the footings, they found the pad was cleared just a little bit too low. Something like 4″ or so and that little bit makes a big difference in how the building sits, in particular for water runoff, etc…. When the plans are drawn up, the surveyor “sets the building” at a particular height above sea level. Then on the site itself he’ll put a stake showing the exact height of the floor. The idea is pour the correct amount of concrete to make the floor that exact height, but without pouring so much you waste money. So the grading company sent one of their smaller machines out there today to do some minor adjustments on the site.
Standing up on the dirt mound looking down on the site. This entire dirt mound I’m standing on was left on the site after the grading was completed exactly for this very purpose. In case additional dirt was needed around the lot.
No, I STILL haven’t had a chance to drive one these things yet……
Grabbing a scoop from the big mound of dirt that was left from the original grading. This entire mound will disappear at some point in the construction to be leveled out for the parking lot.
The front right corner of the building in the foreground. The cone with the white stick to the right is the reference point for the laser sight. That tells the driver exactly where he needs to bring the level of the dirt up to. In fact that stake right in front of the machine has a mark near the bottom that shows the exact height the floor will be when it’s poured. Delicate balance of moving the dirt around while not disturbing that stake in the middle of the site.
There you can see the laser sight on the left. Anything that involves lasers MUST be cool! You can really get a sense of how serene the area is. This is a very small industrial park, I think there’s only 20 lots, and it’s light industrial so it’s pretty darn quiet. When you stand on the lot all you really hear are the birds. We think it’s really going to be a great relaxed atmosphere for everyone to be as creative as we can be.
Tearing down the mound of dirt. That entire mound will disappear eventually over the course of construction and in its place will be the parking lot. We’ll have between 21 and 24 parking spaces when the lot is finished.
Tomorrow I’m meeting with the electrical team to discuss all the electrical runs, outlets, etc…. Oh yes, during all of this I’m still editing, animating, graphic creating and all those things I actually get PAID to do. Nothing like doing all of that AND overseeing a construction project at the same time. I wouldn’t have it any other way…..
