This week we brought online a new ethernet based shared storage system that adds another 48TB of high speed media storage along with some some sweet media asset management and project sharing tools to boot.   We first became aware of Studio Network Solutions back in July of 2014 and it was their media asset management system that really caught our attention.  Our original workhorse 48TB shared storage system is now being used as near-line archive allowing us to move completed projects off the primary, yet keep them handy for editing and changes at a moment’s notice.   So 96TB ready for your next project!

Studio Network Solutions EVO 48TB Online Media Storage (black) along with our original Small Tree 48TB system now operating as our near-line Archive. 96TB in about 6 rack units!

The Studio Network Solutions EVO line includes a ShareBrowser tool which allows us to manage the system quite easily and does away with a lot of OS X and Windows permissions issues we’ve experience in the past.   All User prefs are set via the administration tools and individual users can lock individual files as they’re working if need be.   This adds a whole new level of efficiency and control for us.

Here’s a look at the basic NAS and Project Sharing panel where we can set who has access to which volumes and even down to projects.

Screen-shot-2015-04-02-at-9.57.09-AMYou can see we have broken the 48TB down into four partitions, EVO 1 – 4.   We do that to make it easier to manage the system and also from time to time we can wipe out a partition to completely erase it giving it a clean, fresh directory.   Over on the right you can see “Users.”   Clicking that brings up the main User Management controls.

Screen-shot-2015-04-02-at-9.57.44-AMHere’s the User Management controls for EVO 1 and how we can do a very simple, top level “Allow / Deny” access.  We can also assign whether the user will connect afp or smb depending on how your network is configured.  In our case all the Macs connect afp while the Windows system connects smb.   The user names you see here correspond to our systems and not individual users, however you can set up individual users if you’d like.   What this really does is takes away permission settings from the Mac and Windows OS where we have run into some stumbling blocks trying to get things to work cross platform.  In fact permissions issues just from Mac to Mac were causing some issues.   Now everything is set and managed within the EVO Browser.

Here’s the EVO ShareBrowser on Mac.  This gets installed on every client workstation and this is how you mount / unmount all the volumes and also do the tagging and keywords.

Screen-shot-2015-04-02-at-10.01.08-AM

And here it is on Windows.

You can see they pretty much look the same and you can also see one of the locking features of the EVO Browser in the Windows image.  The Premiere Pro project file is locked and controlled by Edit 3.  This both allows two editors to use the file at the same time and ensures that they will not overwrite each other’s work.    You can read more about this in another recent blog “Two Editors, One Adobe Premiere Pro Project File.”

You’ll also notice on both the Mac and Windows systems, all the connected drives to the computers systems show up and can be indexed and managed by the EVO ShareBrowser.   The software is not wholly connected to just the EVO storage.  So we can Asset Manage all of our media through the EVO ShareBrowser system if we so choose.

Here’s a very simple example of tagging assets through the ShareBrowser.

Screen-shot-2015-04-02-at-9.59.24-AMI’ve got the folder selected and on the right side of the screen you can see the windows for Tags and Comments.   These are exactly what you think they are.   Simple asset management to tag and keyword all assets from folder level down to file level to make for much easier location and retrieval later.

Screen-shot-2015-04-02-at-10.00.34-AM

Now the tags have been added to that folder and now those are searchable elements to retrieve those assets later.   The Tags and Comments can also be exported as an XML and brought into Adobe Premiere Pro and other NLEs.   This is a very high level asset management system.  In no way does this replace full asset management systems like CatDV or Axle which are both very in depth products.   There is also no way to generate a proxy directly through the EVO, this would be done with a third party software.  But for a first level, very simple “Tag the assets as they are loaded” this is an awesome addition with minimal training required.   With the coming of Contemporary Living Network and the sheer amount of data we’ll be dealing with when that launches, this will be a great first step asset management tool for the initial tagging of the assets.

The system runs on both 10GigE and GigE and we have it running through our existing Small Tree 10gig Switch to all our workstations.  For systems that have an internal 10gig card, we’re seeing Read speeds top 700MB/s.   For those with external boxes, like the iMacs with a 10Gig to Thunderbolt adapter, we’re seeing Read speeds top 300MB/s.  This is all in early testing as anyone will tell you, the Write / Read speeds off any test only give you part of the story.   The efficiency and video playback is wholly dependent on how the entire system is configured.   We’re good playing back and editing both HD and UHD on this system.

We’re pretty excited to bring this system online, not only for the boost in our storage capacity, but for the new way to manage the media across our entire network.  It’s going to really enhance the way we work with your projects.   There is a LOT of control for management of the shared storage and if you really want to know the nitty gritty, reach out to the guys at SNS for more details.    Better yet, if you’re going to be at the NAB Show 2015, you can find them at Booth SL12413.  In fact, BCM Founder, Walter Biscardi, Jr will be at the booth most of the day on Tuesday and Wednesday of the show.  So come on by,  say hello and let’s talk Shared Storage and Editing.

Of course if you’d like to see the system here, well give us a shout and come on out to the shop.  Molly the Wonder Dog would love to show you how the new system looks in person.

We’re called upon by clients to create media presentations for trade shows and large venue events.  One of the biggest mistakes I see with media use at trade shows is lack of consideration for the venue, booth location and booth size / layout.  And most importantly, what exactly is the video designed to do?  A trade show requires a lot of thought and consideration to ensure your media is being used effectively rather than just “we need a video for our booth.”

The Venue.

Let’s start here because this is the actually THE most important thing to consider.  If this is a trade show, you’re probably in a convention hall or possibly a large hotel ballroom.  The larger the space, generally the more overall background noise in the room.   The larger spaces also tend to “suck up the sound” so what sounds like a nice volume back in your offices is barely audible in the cavernous space.   So unless you have a small “theater” space to isolate your audience and sound,  passerby are not going to hear your audio well unless you play it at an annoyingly loud level.  And that’s not going to stop anyone, they’ll just avoid your booth altogether.

Lighting is generally terrible at trade shows, either too dark or too bright.   Will you build a roof or put any sort of fabric coating over your booth to control the lighting?   Not necessary but something that needs to be taken into consideration when designing your media for the show.   Lights reflect off screens and they can wash out dark elements in the media making them appear milky rather than sharp.

How big is your booth / space?  If you’re a “big player” in the space with a large booth expecting heavy foot traffic, your media message could get lost in the space.  40″ and 50″ displays look plenty large in offices but can look like a mobile tablet in a large venue booth.   Consider larger displays or multiple, strategically placed displays.  If it’s a smaller booth, we need to consider not only where will the display(s) be but also how will you support it?   Display screens are heavy.

Where is your booth?  Where you are on the show floor and what’s around you will impact your media presentation.  Being next to a “big player” is a great thing because you are guaranteed a lot of foot traffic in your area, but also a bad thing because you could be obscured by the big player.   Being in the back means we need to draw people through the room to your booth.  How your booth is set up and what it faces plays so much into how your media and message are developed.  You need to draw attention to yourself and the further “off the beaten path” you are, the harder it is to get people to notice you.

Oh and by the way, if your booth is along the wall, near the bathrooms, you’re in prime territory.   Bathrooms obviously attract a lot of people at a show, if you’re near them, you should always use that to your advantage.  Be sure you have some significant media or signage facing in that direction.

so what are we doing?

So given all that I’ve presented above, what exactly is the media designed to do?   The obvious answer is to help market your product or services.   The less than obvious answer is HOW do we achieve that?   You’re in a noisy space with less than ideal lighting conditions, competing with a thousand or so of your best friends for the attention of the attendees.

So again, “What EXACTLY is your media designed to do?”   Are we going to tell a full story or are we simply trying to stop people long enough so you can introduce yourself?    That’s pretty much your two choices.

Telling a full story is possible if you have the space or a dedicated theater / presentation space to do so.  Multi-screen displays can really be effective when they are used together to form a single storyline.   Usually you do this visually as it’s hard to hear much in a booth.     If you do have the theater space and we can create a dedicated story with full sound, keep it to 2 minutes maximum.   Go beyond that and folks start to get restless.  If you have a theater space you are generally going to have a live presenter as part of the presentation, so let the video set up whatever they are going to talk about.

If you have a small booth or table, well then we’re probably working with one screen.  If we’re dealing with one screen, will it be fully visible at all times or will it be set up in the back of the booth with personnel standing in front of it to sell your product / services?   If that’s the case, well we really can’t tell a full story on the screen because it will be continually blocked by people.   So don’t go for the story telling if the screen will be partially blocked most of the time.

More often than not, you’ll be using media to both draw people to the booth and give you enough time to say hello, shake hands and pull them in to hear your pitch.   This is THE most effective use of media in any trade show.  Just get people to the booth, let your sales team take it from there.  A good one-on-one interaction with your potential buyer is the still the best sales tool at any trade show.   So think about media as a tool to bring people into your booth.

It’s very important that whatever media you create represents your company and your brand.   Good media  presents your brand, your colors, and incorporates your message into the presentation.  “I just need a video” generally produces some haphazard ‘thing’ that might look cool but has absolutely nothing to do with your product, service or brand.  That just creates confusion.

Oh so you sell this thing?”  “Um no, that’s just a super cool video we had produced, but we DO sell this other thing.”  “Oh, never mind.”

What’s the point of that?  A super cool video that has nothing to do with your services or products is something the video production company can use on their reel but doesn’t really help you in your trade show.    We as a video production company need to listen to YOU and ensure that whatever we do, will draw your prospective buyer into your booth.

Very clean visuals, properly sized and fonted graphics, and best use of the space available will make for the most effective presentation.  Huge video screens and video walls offer a lot of real estate that should be filled with stunning videography, photography, animation and can utilize both large and very small fonted graphics.   Smaller screens should again have stunning imagery but the graphics fonting must be properly sized to ensure your audience can see the key words and message.

Two effective Examples

Small Tree Communications predominately sells Media Servers and High Speed Networking equipment.  Not the sexiest things in the world visually; a big metal box full of hard drives or a big metal box with a whole bunch of ethernet cables coming out of it.  However their products are used to create incredibly visually impactful projects by allowing media production companies to store and access massive amounts of data to create video, animation and film projects.

Location was the National Association of Broadcasters Convention in Las Vegas, one of the largest trade shows in the US in the largest convention center in the US.  Their booth was only 15 x 15, halfway back their particular hall, along the left side wall, in a sea of massive booths by the “big boys.”   A standard ceiling sign would be barely visible among the clutter of so many other hanging signs.    Small Tree was literally going to be lost on the show floor due to their small booth size and location.  Only people who were seeking out the company would be able to find the because they were off the beaten path with not much hope of “stumble upon traffic.”

Solution: Hang a flexible video screen, approx. 10 feet tall, above the booth in the shape of a cylinder.  Small Tree actually came up with the idea of the screen, then it was up to us to figure out what to put up there to draw people in.

We created a 40 second video to play in a loop showcasing scenes from projects created by production companies using Small Tree products AND keep their logo up on the cylinder the entire time.   Video elements included Blue Angel jets, running cheetahs, snowboarding and more.  Moving and exciting action shots.  All framed correctly for the tight horizontal aspect of the screen with the Logo used to cover the video seams.   The video also continuously moved left to right giving the illusion that the cylinder was spinning.    The video could literally be seen from just about everywhere in South Hall.  It stood out even amongst all the static and spinning signage suspended from the rafters and drove foot traffic to a very out of the way booth.

SmallTreeBooth

High Road Craft Ice Cream is a premium ice cream brand created by chefs for chefs and foodies.  Once people taste, the flavor sells itself.   Incredible product that has to stand out among hundreds of other options vying for both the public and wholesaler attention.  What sets the company apart is that they pretty much make every ingredient for their ice cream and many of the processes and cooking are still done by chefs, by hand.  They have a full commercial kitchen that feeds out into the main ice cream factory.

Location is multiple food and retail centric trade shows throughout the United States.  They don’t have a booth per-se, more like a serving stand that’s the width of their ice cream service cart and just deep enough for two people to stand and serve.  So maybe 6-8 feet by 4 or 5 feet is their entire footprint at any given trade show.  High Road wanted to remind buyers that they are truly the ice cream of chefs, for chefs and foodies.

Solution: We created a video presentation that emphasized the heart and soul of what goes into each batch of ice cream.  The people, the cooking process and many of the fresh ingredients used in the product.  Documentary style close ups and beauty shots of fresh ingredients being prepared and cooked; hand mixing ingredients into the ice cream base; the attention of the chefs to what their doing; and we added a live ice cream demonstration to show the fun behind the brand as well.    Because the space is such a small footprint, we made sure to keep the High Road logo dominant at all times so the screen serves as both an enticement to stop and taste the ice cream and as a sign with their brand name.

The entire video runs approx 8 minutes cut very loosely to music with three distinct scenes.  Fresh food preparation, fresh ice cream preparation, a low country boil party featuring ice cream.   Because the photography is so stunning we allowed the scenes to play out longer rather than just cut quickly to music that the audience may never hear in a trade show.  In order to appreciate the work that goes into a fresh product, we wanted to allow the audience time to see each shot and each scene clearly.   The video turned out to be doubly effective.   First it helped to entice people to stop and taste a flavor. Secondly people lingered watching the video and they tried additional flavors.

Screen-Shot-2015-02-09-at-6.20.40-PM

Two examples of effective use of media targeted towards specific uses and specific audiences.  Both designed to attract additional buyers to the booths, yet both done in completely different styles.   When planning media for your next trade show, give it some serious thought, team up with a creative team who actually listens to you and your needs and be sure to create more than just “I need a video.”  [hr]

Biscardi Creative Media Completes Unique Homeopathic Energetic Medicine Client Project

Virtual Gut Band Video Promises to be Cost Effective Method to Weight Loss

Atlanta, Ga. — Biscardi Creative Media (BCM) recently had the opportunity to work on a one-of-a-kind project in the world of homeopathic energetic medicine. The question for BCM was, “can you produce a video that can help convince the viewer they’re actually having surgery?”  An outwardly simple request turned into a true gem when BCM learned this venture had unique challenges that would stretch both creativity and ingenuity.  This particular project would need to delve into the realm of positive visualization and relaxation. Never one to back down from a challenge BCM took on the project that was recently christened and released as the “Virtual Gut Band Video.”

Through relaxation, visualization and behavioral change, the Virtual Gut Band Video helps viewers to imagine and believe a gastric band has been fitted to their stomach. In other words they feel as if they’ve successfully undergone gastric band surgery. The Founder and Owner of Homeopathic Weight Management, Donna Kerley commented further, “I’ve learned through my research and practice that you first have to address the critical mind so that you know that it’s safe and respected. Once the critical mind through relaxation becomes the observer of the actions or thoughts; it then allows the feeling mind to make changes about its perceptions and attitudes toward the self and body. I wanted to provide a product that through audible stimulation and positive visualization could help reshape people’s lives, without implementing expensive and invasive solutions such as surgery. The Virtual Gut Band Video does just that.”

Managing Partner at Biscardi Creative Media, Walter Biscardi, Jr., served as Producer for the Virtual Gut Band Video project. “We started with establishing the ultimate goal and purpose for the project. We then reviewed the budget and went to task on developing a product that would be effective and efficient. As a result, we knew that this would work best as a multi-phase project. To stay within budget our team was able to come up with resourceful methods for the first phase which included the creative use of existing stock footage.

Including pre-planning, the project was a two month initiative with three weeks dedicated to editorial.   Editing was lead by BCM editor R. John Becker and the video was given the full post-production treatment. It was cut in Adobe Premiere Pro, the go-to editing tool of choice for the BCM team. Color grading was completed using Red Giant Software Colorista and Magic Bullet Looks. “We needed a dreamlike look and feel because we were creating an out of body experience.  It was easy to create that in Magic Bullet Looks” said Walter.

Full audio and sound mix was completed by sound designer Patrick Belden. “Early on I realized that the most important part of this project would be the audio and the sound mix” commented Walter. “I knew that to make a virtual operation as believable as possible, the viewer would need to not only see but hear all the sounds in the operating room while the ‘surgery’ was taking place.  Proper sound mix through ProTools and Patrick’s deft touch were vital to make this work.  Equally important to the success of a project like this is the proper voice.  It’s the voice that relaxes and carries the viewer through the entire procedure and Donna had a very distinct idea to have a British female voice.  Fortunately we work regularly with July Lindsay who is a British transplant and her voice was spot on for this project.  We maintained her voice as narrator at full volume but other voices in the surgical room or hospital hallways were placed as if in dream-like state. All the components working together helps to establish a level of reality to the virtual surgical process.”

“Partnering with Biscardi Creative Media was an amazing experience” said Donna. “The BCM team was responsive, professional and genuine. I watched magic happen by being able to see what I had visualized inside my mind come to fruition. Walter’s business title is Creative Genius and it’s the truth. He not only heard what I was saying but he heard my passion and heart and helped to manifest all of it into the final product.”

“This was Donna’s first time working through a video production. We had a great time collaborating with her” said Walter. “Having the opportunity to work on a challenging project with a new concept that will have a positive impact on the lives of others is rewarding.”

The Virtual Gut Band Video was recently released and both the HWM and BCM teams are looking forward to collecting feedback from early users. HWM’s weight management video program is currently slated to be a four part series. Biscardi Creative Media looks forward to a continued partnership with HWM to bring new, impactful and cost-effective weight loss products to the masses.

“I was thrilled when Post Magazine asked to include WalterBiscardi.com in their recent article on training” said Walter. “Any opportunity to share with industry professionals about our new initiative is always welcome, especially since there are some great aspects to our training that cause it stand our from the rest. For example, all trainings will be provided by real industry professionals that use the tools and practice the craft on a daily basis. Trainings will also include discussions about the business and creative sides of the industry versus solely technical tutorials.

“Training” By Marcus Loftus, Post Magazine {excerpt}

One of the Website’s first large modules is “The Documentary Walkthrough,” a five-hour training series that covers everything a first-time producer needs to know — from when the client first contacts them to all the questions that need consideration before a contract is signed.

“Yes, there are going to be ‘button pushing’ software tutorials, but even with them, we are going to do it completely differently,” he explains. “We want to transcend the tools and talk about the creative. While I might use Premiere Pro to talk about documentary workflow, the concept and the organization that I am presenting will translate to any NLE you are using.”

Biscardi has an entire series planned for Adobe Next, as well as for Resolve, SpeedGrade and Final Cut Pro. {Read Full Article “Training” by Post Magazine}

Really proud to announce the completion of our latest project produced in partnership with Cielo Productions and Producer Gary Strieker.

Medical textile company, Vestergaard Frandsen was looking for a special way to celebrate their 50th Anniversary. They didn’t just want to spend a lot of money on a party, a company trip, etc… They decided to put their money and their company efforts in creating an innovative event to promote HIV awareness and testing in Africa, specifically in Kenya.

In order to be properly treated for HIV, you must first be tested. In Kenya, and throughout Africa, there has been a deep seated stigma associated not only with the disease, but even just going for a blood test. If you’re going for the test, then you must be immoral if you suspect you might have HIV. This results in millions of people not aware of their status and thus passing on the disease to yet more people.

At the same time, Malaria and Diarrhea are major diseases in Africa that are responsible for millions of deaths each year. Vestergaard Frandsen has developed insecticidal bed nets to keep mosquitoes from biting at night and water filtration devices to help prevent diarrhea. So they developed the idea to give away these health prevention aids in return for taking an HIV test. Hence, “The Test.”

The results, in a word, were astounding and beyond the wildest dreams of the company and the health ministries in Kenya. It is hoped that this film will show the world what is possible when the private sector and government work together for common good of all mankind.

A video crew from Cielo Productions was led by Gary Strieker throughout the Lurambi District of western Kenya over a 1 year period. Strieker, along with Co-Producer Walter Biscardi, Jr. crafted the story with lead Editor Kim O’Neill. Biscardi completed all the refined cuts and Patrick Belden provided the sound mix. The film debuted at a Global Health Campaign event in Washington DC in September 2010 and is slated for film festival and other screenings worldwide.

Website is now live and you can check there for screenings as they are scheduled.

So it was simply a gorgeous day out here in good old Buford, Georgia as we gathered in 95 degree heat (probably 90% humidity) for the traditional “Toss the Shovel” groundbreaking photo.  As you can see the construction path was already cut in yesterday and all of us headed on over to the lot during lunch.   See all of this is really the front yard for Molly to run around in.  Our office is going to be behind the trees…..   Kim O’Neill, Jenny Reese, Roger Mahr, R. Today is officially “Groundbreaking Day” for Biscardi Creative Media!!!!    A truly monumental day in the history of this company and we make our third step in the evolution of our facilities.   For those who don’t know, I started this company in a spare bedroom in the corner of our house.   Then we expanded to the 1,000 sq. ft office I never thought we would outgrow.  Well now we make our biggest step yet.

Ah, can you just see the excitement on everyone’s face?   Yes, yes, I can see it.  You’re just looking the wrong way….

You know I talk a lot about VARs and the importance of finding the right VAR for your business.  (Value Added Reseller in case you’re wondering….) I have purchased about 90% of my equipment from David Strupp and the WH Platts company over the past 5 years or so.  He’s just a fantastic guy who is always there with an answer, a demo or even a good laugh when I need it.  I think he was almost more excited than we were when we announced the new project.  Trip is the “new guy” at Platts but he’s quickly become part of the BCM team.   David and the entire WH Platts company believes in building relationships over that one time sale and they’ve been a real asset and a friend to our company.  That’s pretty much true of all the companies I deal with from AJA Video Systems (Nick Rashby is just one of the nicest guys in the industry) to Flanders Scientific (More of the nicest people in the industry) to Bob Zelin (Just a brilliant and very funny engineer.) Life is too short to have to “deal with people” you don’t like. Surround yourself with good people, people who like to laugh, and you put yourself in a good position not only for business, but for life.

See, people who can laugh are so much more fun to be around….

The lovely Nicole Wright from the Gwinnett Chamber of Commerce makes a surprise visit.  Welcome to the BCM Family Nicole!

Kim O’Neill gives some serious consideration to the theme and look of her new edit suite…. Or perhaps she’s wondering if the sun is in the East or the West?… Or perhaps “Did I leave that iron on?”… Or perhaps, “It’s not easy being green….”

And this is what it’s all about.  A life partner who believes in the dream.

Enough kissing.  LET’S BUILD A NEW FACILITY!!!!!
