While on vacation recently, BCM Principal Walter Biscardi, Jr was able to combine two of his passions. Video production and cruising. Just before sailing on the Celebrity Cruises “Silhouette,” to the Caribbean, he picked up an iOgrapher which makes a very useful camera platform for the iPhone and iPad. Featuring interchangeable lenses, cold shoe mounts and tripod mounting points the iOgrapher essentially turns the iPhone into a professional camera giving the videographer great camera stability.

The cruise was the perfect testing platform as we’re looking for new ways to work with video, especially in social media. We’re also testing some new ideas for the upcoming Contemporary Living Network and we can see the benefits of creating original content with this setup.

The one thing he didn’t have on this trip was a shotgun microphone. Since the phone is mounted sideways on the iOgrapher, the microphone on the phone is not great for picking up natural sound and spoken word. Before the next vacation, he’ll be adding a shotgun mic.

We also didn’t know about some additional apps for the iPhone that allow for manual Iris and Color Balance controls on the phone. You’ll see the auto-iris kick in quick in quite a bit with all the bright / dark areas. And the color balance does change from time to time. We’ll add those apps before the next vacation as well.

All in all, very impressive to see the picture quality and especially the stability of the images. This entire project was filmed with the iPhone 6. Absolutely NO camera stabilization was added to any of these images in the video below.

Also VERY impressed with Celebrity Cruises and their Silhouette. This was our first time on Celebrity and we were so impressed with the ship, the crew and of course, the food that we booked another cruise on the Celebrity Reflection. Celebrity is just top notch, white glove treatment but without the stuffy attitude. Beautiful ship, wonderful people and a great time.

BCM completes “The Impossible Project”

7 Days.   5 Shoots.  11 Locations.   8 Cameras.   5 Completed Videos.

The call came in on Friday.  “Our client saw the 4k culinary work you did and would like you to create 5 original videos with a mix of 4k and HD formats.  And we need it by next Friday.  Can you do it?”  It became what we called “The Impossible Project” and we were just insane enough to agree to do it.

The parameters were laid out by the client needing our team to create 1 – 3 minute videos of 5 specific types of genres and elements.  Interior architecture, Urban Life and City, Parks and Nature and elements like that.  They wanted all original photography and the idea was to utilize as many 4k and HD cameras and formats as feasibly possible.

Blackmagic 4k RAW image of a skateboarder catching air in Atlanta

Led by  Principal Walter Biscardi, Jr., a plan was quickly formulated to make this project a reality.  “Marion Laney and I have collaborated on a lot of projects since our ‘Good Eats’ days and with a project this crazy and with so many elements to pull together, he was the first person added to the team.”

While Walter pulled together the plan to execute the overall project, Marion formulated a 2 day shooting schedule throughout the Atlanta metro region that would cover the City and Urban life along with Architectural interiors.  His input on locations was invaluable to get the imagery needed in a short amount of time.

Walter shot for three days on his own and he teamed up with Marion for two days to shoot all over Atlanta, the Caribbean and Dauphin Island, Alabama.   “The Caribbean materials that I had shot in 4k and with my iPhone while on vacation turned out to be fortuitous because some of that fit perfectly with what was needed for this project and Marion happened to be in Dauphin Island so he was able to film some materials there.”

The key to the entire project was media management from the start.  “If we overshot with the cameras, which honestly I typically do, it would have overwhelmed the post production process.  So I made sure that we limited the raw photography to just ‘quality selects.’  We essentially shot as if we only had one camera card to use in an entire day so we both focused on just getting the best images for the project,” notes Walter

In total around 10 hours of new original materials were shot using the 8 various cameras and all of this was edited down about 15 minutes in 5 videos for the event.  Not only did we finish the project, we delivered it at 10am on Friday.  “It was a lot of long hours, very little sleep, but wow did have a great time working on this project.  It was satisfying to not just deliver an original project of this magnitude to quickly, but to exceed the client’s expectation and deliver outstanding quality imagery.  That’s what makes it all worthwhile,” said Biscardi.

Of course we still have our Blackmagic Pocket Cinema Camera for a third HD camera.  This extremely versatile little camera can literally fit in a pocket and we currently have it fitted with vintage Canon FD lenses.

For field recording we added a new Sennheiser wireless microphone pack along with a Countryman Isomax microphone bringing the flexibility of wireless movement and the high quality of Countryman sound together.  We’ve used Countryman mics for years now and love their rich, full bodied sound.

On the grip side of things, we’ve added a new floating stand for our FSI field monitor and will be upgrading the lighting package as well.   We’ve come a long way from our Post Production roots.   Give us a shout for more details on the gear and our current rates.  770.271.3427

How were we able to do that?  A young, energetic crew and most importantly, our host, Ian Gregg.  Ian was able to memorize complex dialogue so quickly we could roll through scenes and multiple takes in a hurry.     I’ll have a full article coming soon on the entire process from start to finish, but that will come after we complete Post.   For now, here’s more images from one incredible shoot.   If you missed the first blog on this shoot, check it out here.

Oh and if you need a versatile outdoor location for filming, Lanier Islands Resort was so accommodating and they have so many places to shoot from shoreline to forest types of places to the pools to the hotels to the trails, golf and so much more.   Definitely look them up for great outdoor and indoor locations.

Two days down, three to go in production. Actor Ian Gregg has just been amazing nailing his lines most every take. We’re actually ahead of schedule by one shot going into our final day at our main Lab studio at a local high school. A long grueling, outdoor day is coming up Thursday with temps in the low 90’s and high humidity outside.  Our crew is up for the challenge.   We’re shooting for the first time with the Sony a7s being manned by Cheryl Collins.  Full article will come after we’re done but here’s a quick look at the first two days of Production!

June 1, 2015; Atlanta, GA; – Biscardi Creative Media (BCM) has completed post-production on two Public Service Announcements for Fix Georgia Pets featuring world-renowned dog trainer Victoria Stilwell.  The PSAs remind all of us the importance of spaying and neutering our pets to help cut down on animal overpopulation.  This topic is near and dear to our hearts at BCM with our own Molly the Wonder Dog being a rescue.

BCM Principal, Walter Biscardi, Jr. and Victoria’s production team talked through the PSA before principal photography.  “We’re thankful that Victoria and Van got us involved in pre-production because that is so important to communicate prior to photography,” said Biscardi.  “This is especially true when working with lower budget projects to make sure we all are on the same page and we can provide the client with the best possible message in the production time we have to produce the spot.”

Screen Shot 2015-05-31 at 5.24.40 PM

Producer Van Zieller and Biscardi also discussed the style of spot prior to photography wanting to avoid something overly ‘depressing.’  “The problem with a lot of these animal rescue / welfare spots is that they are just so depressing and beat you over the head with super sad imagery that you tune away immediately,” notes Biscardi.  “That completely defeats the purpose of the spot if our audience won’t watch.  While there’s no way to sugarcoat what’s happening to these animals in shelters, we made creative decisions in the music and the pacing of the piece to make this a spot that is built on hope, not despair.”

Van and his crew spent a day at a local shelter photographing both the animals, some adoptions and the workers.   Biscardi utilized a combination of Adobe Premiere Pro, Adobe After Effects and Rampant Design Tools to drive the look and feel of the spot.  “I had to turn this spot around basically in one day, but still create a unique style to keep the spot moving.  Production mattes from Rampant Design gave me a lot of movements options without needing to keyframe and allowed me to achieve a pretty unique look for a spot of this type in a very short amount of time.”  One line in particular about one dog potentially resulting in 60,000 puppies over 5 years drove the use of the animated mattes to create a unique look for the spot.

Screen Shot 2015-05-31 at 5.25.03 PM

Both a 30 and 15 second version of the spot was created both for broadcast and web based use.   The spots are the latest in a long running commitment by Biscardi Creative Media to support causes through our work.  We appreciate the opportunity to help tell these important stories.

A true sound nerd, Michael spends much of his rare free time educating editors about how to make their own audio better. He’s also been a musician for 35 years and plays the guitar and bass guitar.

“When I was a kid, one of the first Christmas presents that I got really excited about was a cassette recorder. My next one was an electric guitar. My acoustic guitar was very exciting, but when I got my electric guitar I sat in a room and played with the knobs for hours. That’s when I knew there was either something wrong with me or some kind of potential in me.”

I talked with Michael about the workspace he uses at BCM and how it’s become an encouraging creative and technical environment for his work.

What does this room offer you that your home studio doesn’t?

My at-home studio is great for much of what I do. But particularly when I want to mix in surround but even just for bigger projects, I can hear more in here than I can at home. This a nice big room, and big rooms always sound and feel better when you’re doing audio. It’s set up very well. It does a nice job with 5.1 surround which is really helpful for today’s sound design work, because I haven’t taken the time to really make my home studio as 5.1-friendly as it could be. It’s also just not big enough – you need more space for 5.1 and this is a big, comfortable room. Even for stereo, I love it. The Genelec speakers are a really strong full-range sort of speaker. I’ve also had clients in here and they love how comfortable it is for them.

It’s also really nice to have access to a good voice-over booth. It doesn’t have any anomalies or strange characteristics. Some vocal booths have a little “honk” in Michael2them, caused by reflections within a certain frequency range. There’s no HVAC noise or anything either, it was thought through when it was built.

Why is the design of the room important?

Sonically, it’s such an important thing to have these walls be non-parallel. It takes a lot to build something like that, so the fact I have a place where I can go that has that kind of design to the build of the room, along with the drop ceiling, helps make the quality of my work better. Rooms in general are rectangular with all parallel surfaces, but this room was designed with angles and non-parallel walls.  Even the ceiling has pretty cool angles. When sound is allowed to bounce between parallel surfaces, you get what’s called “standing waves” which completely transform the way a mix can sound.  This room was designed to eliminate that. At home I rarely mix over 65 or 70dB, but here – with the size and design of the room – I can enjoy mixing at higher levels without fatigue.

Is it difficult to pick up projects and move between home and here?

Screening2
Not at all. It’s as easy as plugging in a drive. I do most of my projects on Firewire 800 drives, so I plug my drive into the Mac Pro in the machine room, turn everything on, and by the time the computer is up and running, I’m up and running. It’s all fully compatible with my system at home. Once I plug in a drive, I’ve got everything I need.

It’s also great to have the Small Tree shared storage here when I’m working on BCM projects. I can load up the latest cut of a video and have it playing through the projector from ProTools in a couple minutes.

As a freelancer, why do you like coming in to use a mixing room at BCM sometimes?

I love the people and camaraderie. I like the fact I can go where I can feel like I’m part of a team even without being on staff. I’m always welcome here, I’m not an outsider. It’s also great to be able to come into a creative environment. When I’m on BCM projects, we can bounce ideas around and get instant feedback. When I’m on my own thing, I can still draw from that energy. You can get good equipment anywhere, but at the end of the day, it’s the people and the creative environment that contribute to quality work.RialtoTheater_2013

In addition to the ProTools mixing room, BCM also has a variety of edit suites (furnished and empty), a DaVinci Resolve room, production offices, and warehouse space available for rental. Detailed space specifications are available on our Rental page.

Biscardi Creative Media Begins Post on Victoria Stilwell’s “Arson Dogs”

Adobe Creative Cloud Fosters Collaborative Workflow

July 17, 2014; Atlanta, GA; – Biscardi Creative Media (BCM) has begun post-production on a new web series called Arson Dogs for world-renowned dog trainer Victoria Stilwell and her Positively website. The series follows Victoria to southern Maine, where State Farm’s Arson Dog Training Program is conducted to train handlers and working dogs together to sniff out accelerants like gasoline and propane at potential arson sites.

Accelerant detection dogs are an essential part of the fire investigation team, working alongside law enforcement officials to alert their handlers of the presence of accelerants. Accounting for a 40-50% increase in arson convictions, these dogs undergo a rigorous training process that is based on positive reinforcement.

Victoria commented, “As a dog trainer on TV and in private practice for over 15 years, I’ve witnessed firsthand the power of positive dog training with everything from pit bulls to Pomeranians. There’s a pretty substantial debate raging in the dog world between positive trainers and those who believe in old school punishment and dominance, with those more traditional trainers saying that positive reinforcement is nice with puppies but doesn’t work with ‘red zone’ and high-drive working dogs.”

“That’s why I was so excited to learn about State Farm’s Arson Dog Training Program, which uses exclusively reward-based positive training techniques to train the canine Ferrari’s of the working dog world: arson dogs.”

Victoria and her crew spent five days at the school documenting many hours of raw material on up to five different cameras. While post-production continues on the show, a trailer was first completed on a tight deadline: about a week to craft a sizzle from over 3500 raw clips. BCM founder Walter Biscardi, Jr. led the edit with assistance from BCM editors R. John Becker and Kylee Wall.

“Victoria’s team uses the Adobe Creative Cloud suite, as do we at BCM, so we worked with them to show how best to log and organize the materials so we could use their notes to quickly turn the project around.  They did a beautiful job logging and organizing the bins in multiple ways so we could cross reference. Everything was loaded into our Small Tree Shared Storage system which proved a major key in the quick turnaround,” Walter said.

Victoria commented, “We’re very excited to be working with BCM on the post production for this Arson Dogs web series project, as their professionalism, quality, and love of the subject matter – especially dogs – shines through in all their work.”

“The Arson Dogs project is a perfect example of client collaboration at its best. This was a thrill for me personally because I’m a long time dog owner and I’ve admired Victoria’s style of dog training. It was also a lot of fun cutting this with my own Molly the Wonder Dog hanging out in the edit suite with me,” Walter added.

Arson Dogs will be distributed through Victoria Stilwell’s Positively website (http://www.positively.com) and YouTube page (http://www.youtube.com/victoriastilwell).  New episodes will be available in the coming weeks.

The trailer edit was led by BCM founder Walter Biscardi Jr., so I asked him to tell us about how collaboration, communication and Adobe Creative Cloud helped make this fast turn a success: “Without the collaboration of Victoria’s team, the shared storage storage system allowing us to work together, and all the new efficiency features in Adobe Premiere Pro CC, it’s doubtful the trailer would have been completed to the quality we were able to deliver.”

First, what are Arson Dogs?

ArsonDogs-3

Arson dogs are also called accelerant detection dogs. They’re an essential part of the fire investigation team. They work alongside law enforcement officials to alert their handlers of the presence of accelerants, usually marking a scent by sitting in front of it.

The Arson Dogs series follows Victoria to Maine where State Farm’s Arson Dog Training Program is conducted, one of only two arson dog training programs in the country.  The series will tell the story of handlers and dogs getting to know each other and learning to work together for the rest of the dog’s life.

That’s a lot of ground to cover for a three minute trailer. How did you get organized with all the material?

Victoria’s team uses the Adobe suite, as do we at BCM, so we worked with them to show how best to log and organize the materials so we could use their notes to quickly turn the project around.  They did a beautiful job logging and organizing the bins in multiple ways so we could cross reference.

Beyond that, we were provided with plenty of notes and the information needed not only for the sizzle but also for cutting the main episodes.  Everything was loaded into our Small Tree Shared Storage system which proved a major key in the quick turnaround.

How did everyone at BCM work together on this?

From a master Adobe Premiere Pro project, Kylee and John worked off sub-projects, organizing select elements into timelines while I was cutting the main sizzle. We were all working off variants of the exact same project, all using the same media from the server, and I would simply import their timelines into the master project.

ArsonDogs-4

The Marker Window feature came in huge on this project as well because John and Kylee put Markers throughout each timeline and via the Markers Window, I could quickly scan to see what was in there and grab elements.

By all working together, including Alex (on Victoria’s team), we were able to scan through five cameras of material in just two days. Throughout the edit, I would ask Kylee or John to grab some music or some element in the sub-projects so I could keep working on the cut.

When it came to the finishing, John mixed the final audio in his sub-project while I color graded in DaVinci Resolve.  We brought everything together in the master Premiere Pro project.

How was communication before post began important to the success of the project?

ArsonDogs-5
It’s so awesome when the client comes to us before we start post and we can walk through the project together. We came up with a plan and then executed it to perfection, allowing us to really deliver the project they wanted rather than “well this is all we could do with the time we had.”

It’s such a great feeling when you can collaborate with the client right up front before they get into the edit suite bringing so much more value to their project. The Arson Dogs project is just a perfect example of client collaboration at its best

How is the message of the Arson Dogs show important to you?

WalterAndMollyArsonDogs

This was a thrill for me personally because I’m a long time dog owner and I’ve admired Victoria’s style of dog training.  It’s a very positive and non-domineering way of working with the animals, and that’s how it should be. It was also lot of fun cutting this with my own Molly the Wonder Dog hanging out in the edit suite with me.

Arson Dogs will be distributed through Victoria Stilwell’s Positively website and YouTube page. New episodes will be available in the coming weeks. Watch the trailer:
